Session Chair: Philip Yuan

    Philip F. Yuan is a Professor in the College of Architecture and Planning (CAUP) at Tongji University and Council member of the Architectural Society of China (ASC). He is the co-founder of the Digital Architectural Design Association (DADA) of the ASC and founding partner of Shanghai Archi-Union Architects. He was a visiting scholar at MIT during 2008~2009. He established the Digital Design Research Center (DDRC) in 2010 and has organized the “DigitalFUTURE Shanghai” summer school program for the past 6 years. His research focuses on computational design and digital fabrication.

    In 2015 he won the 8th ASC “Young Architects Award”. His work was shortlisted for the 2015 WA “Architectural Achievement Award” and won the 2015 Shenzhen Biennale CPublic Award”.  He won the 2014 ARCASIA “Honorable Mentioned Award”, and his work was shortlisted for the 2014 Wienerberger “Brick Award”. He won the 2013 “Feng Jizhong Architectural Education Award” and four other National awards.

    He has been invited to give keynote speeches and attend many academic conferences and exhibitions. Including the Milan Triennial 2012 and the “Solar Decathlon Europe 2012” in Madrid. He gave a keynote speech about “High-Low Tech Digital Fabrication: Towards a Quasi-Autonomous Tectonics” at the CAAD Futures 2013 conference. In 2013, his solo exhibition” Autonomous Tectonics” was held at the AU Space. In 2014 he curated the “Robotic Future” parallel exhibition at the Shanghai Biennial in the Minsheng Museum. In 2015 his solo exhibition “Presence of Absence” was held at the Fab-Union Space.

    He has written and co-edited 7 books and published nearly 80 papers in different academic journals. He is the author of A Tectonic Reality (China Architecture & Building Press, 2011), co-editor (with Neil Leach) of Fabricating the Future and Scripting the Future (Tongji University Press, 2012), Digital Workshop in China (Tongji University Press, 2013), co-editor (with Achim Menges and Neil Leach) of Robotic Futures (Tongji University Press, 2015), and author of From Diagrammatic Thinking to Digital Fabrication (Tongji University Press, 2016).
